The Giver

I just read The Giver. The Giver is about a boy, Jonas, who lives in a community with so many rules it is confusing. Such as; everybody has their birthday in December, someone who lives in community receives a general present that everyone in one's age group will get too. For instance, when someone turns eight the boys get a haircut and the girls get to take their hair ribbons out. Or when one turns nine each new nine year old gets a bike. He receives an assignment when Jonas is twelve, like everybody in the community. But Jonas doesn't get assigned, he gets selected. Until his mysterious surprise, he is clueless.

What I liked the most about The Giver is how Lois Lowry, the author,
made you figure things out when Jonas did, so it makes it feel sort of like a
mystery. In the community that Jonas lives in seems like it is in the future because nobody
knows what an animal is, their is no such thing as snow.

When I read The Giver I felt like I was in the story. I also feel sort of bad for the people
that live in this community because they don't actually get to experience life the way they
want to because they're held back by all the rules.

We have to read it next year for Sixth grade, but it is worth reading again so you can
squeeze out all the facts and important things someone could miss the first time they read this
wonderful book.

If you like to feel, smell and "see" what you are reading, I recommend that you read this
book, because you will enjoy it!

  1. I reread this book this summer and, I agree, it is a book that can be read over and over again. Each time I read it, I get a new "ah ha!"

Your last line -- about feeling, smelling, and seeing what you're reading -- captures the intensity of this read. Kudos!
