  1. I like the character Devy, because she defends herself. I think that the setting is impotant, becayse the old fashion stuff would be comfusing without that knowlage, and the way they speak. I am on a cliff to see what happens with the marraige of devy sister.

  2. this book is a little hard to understand because it was writen in the south. i think that many people in this book are poor and i think that sence this is such a poor place, i think that the people who are rich there would not be rich anywere else.

  3. Dovey Coe is very good at knowing what is right and what is not. I say that because, when Parnell asked to marry Caroline Dovey thought for sure that she should say no. I also think Dovey feels more like a boy than a girl because, she has a pocket knife and everybody tells her to act more ladylike.

  4. Eva good point but Parnel has a nice car.

Dovey is hard to predict because her friend who's name I think is Wilson is a little on to Dovey but she is mad about her sister is getting married, but she likes Wilson a little more than her sister likes Parnel?

  5. I believe Dovey is a tomboy because she liked working on the roof with her dad,she has a pocket knife, and she was embarassed to wear her yellow dress even for her sisters going away party. That is why she hid her dress at the back of her closet. If she were not a tomboy this would be a very diffrent story.

  6. Ya I really agree with Jack I do think she is a tomboy for EX: How she wanted that knife and how her mom wanted to make Dovey more lady like. But when her dad made her pound some nails in that wasn't helping.

  8. I think that Dovey is poor because she hase riped clothing and because the south use to be realy poor to live in. Dovey was wize to say no when carnel proposed to Dovey. She also had the guts to say it infront of all tnhe people in the part. It is also cined of hard to know what they are sayind because they are for the south so it is alittle diffrent how the speak.

  9. I think that Dovey Coe is a a outcast to some people, but is really happy hedonist. this I think is true because she does not care what Parnell has to say about her looks, or how she does not intend to get married. She wants to live a life that will make her happy, even if that means looking like a tomboy to everybody. She treasures her pocket knife, does not put a comb to her hair, hates dresses, and takes no interest in boys. She does not care about the looks or the way she plays with her brother, Amus, a deaf, daring boy. Very unlady-like. I admire her for this, because she is always compared to her sister, Carolyn, a very pretty girl.

  10. I think that Devy is a good main character because here mom wants here to be one thing, "Lady Like" but she would rather be a outdoor girl. I think that It came to her mom as quite a shock when Caroline and Devy each came back from the farmers market with something. Caroline with a mirror, and Devy with a pocket knife.

  11. I think that Dovey Coe is a very different character from a lot of other books for. I think Dovey was very brave to fight Parnell. I still can't believe she killed him. I wonder how Parnell's mother will react. I think that Parnell's mother might tell the police, and put Dovey in jail. I bet Dovey's parents will be very upset with her, for killing Parnell.

  12. When Maggie first said we were reading Dovey Coe I started thinking oh brother.I thought it was going to be a really boring book, but when Maggie started reading it it was actually a pretty good book. And I also agree with Eva because it is a little confusing because it is based in the south.

  13. I really like this book so far. I like how Maggie reads the book in a southern accent. My favorite character is Dovey. I like she is different than everybody else and does not care what other people think of her. I like how she stands up for her brother and cares what others think of him more than she cares what people think of her. I think she is a very interesting character and I like her personality.

  14. I think Dovey is kind and loving, but aggressive too. When Parnell was about to throw a brick at Tom, Dovey stabbed her pocket knife into Parnell's arm.

  15. Dovey is very sure of things. And wont take no for an answer. When she knows what shes got to do she goes to do it and not wait. Even though she is rough and a bit like a boy she knows right from wrong and is not mean to anyone uless they start the fight. I also think that the auther wanted people to think one thing in the beginning of the story and something els in the next couple chapters. For example in the beginning of the story the auther would describe Caroline being dumb and pretty and not really caring about anyhting but her looks. But in the next few chapters I started to reiliez that Caroline was not just all about her looks and really wanted to do something good in her life. Anyway I'm looking forward to what happens next because we are at a very good cliff hanger!

  16. To me Dovey Coe is a book of mystery because when she woke up after being knocked out, she woke up to see parnel caraway dead. The Author gave us a sneak peak in the book at the beginning. As we go farther in the book,I want to see more and more. I also think that it can get a little confusing since they talk from the south but overall, it's a good book

  17. I think that Dovey Coe is a verry good at standing up for her self because she dosn't really take insults or being bossed around from anyone. Also, when Parnell was about to punch her, she didn't back down. Or when Parnell was trying to boss her around when he was with Cariline, she didn't take it.
Overall, I really enjoy this book and it gets better and better the more we read it! Great book choice Maggie!

  18. I love the setting in this book. I love the southern accent, and the way the people are a little poorer. It really makes the author have to make you understand things there, which means they have too explain more, and thats what makes this book so good.
I also feel like me and Dovey have some things in common. I sure wouldn't want to have to be all lady like and such. I like my freedom to wear anything, or to be able to buy a pocket knife if I had the money. But there is something that makes living where I do special, and that's that people here don't judge people like Dovey here as harsh. I feel real sympathy for Dovey, because she is just doing what she thinks she should, but she's not allowed to.
I also think that Amus, is a veery sweet character, and brings some more emotions to the story.

  19. I think Dovey Coe has an interesting personalitay. It seems like she hates boys and doesn't really care for them much. For instance, Parnell Caraway is a good example. But when it comes to the some boys (iknow the boy who kissed her but I can't remember his name. Come on. I've been sick for 2 days) she just falls for them. Also Dovey seems like she is kind of a tom boy because of her interests for pocket knifes and boyish things. I think it is kind if sad how people treat Dovey's brother (Same thing. I know his name. It starts with an A)They treat him like he's not human just cause he's different and can't see. That's just cruel.

  20. I think the author did a good job making Amos deaf, and Dovey teaching him to read lips. And when he spoke his first word, that was cool. I think Dovey isn't going to jail. Parnell diserved it! And Henry, the person is Wilson Brown that you were thinking of!

  21. I think that Dovey is a very lucky girl and has some hard times as well.
I think that Caroline might go to jail because the court might fing out that she was close to him and what happened.

  22. I like Dovey because she knows who is a bad person and who is a good person. But one I think that she is wrong. I think that Amos killed Parnell for revenge of Tom.

  23. I like the authors style of writing because there are not many books that talk in slang. You can tell that the characters are from the south because how they talk. I like how the author put some action in the story because without any action the book would be dull.

  24. At the beginning of the story it seems like Amos really needs Dovey. What I thought was interesting was that by the end of the book it seems that it's really Dovey who needs Amos. Before the trial, Dovey judges people based on her own strong feelings. She's sure Parnell is all bad. Once she is on trial herself she gets judged by everyone else and realizes what that feels like. It makes her feel nervous and a little scared. When Parnell's sister Paris cries at the trial, it surprises Dovey and makes her think about what it would mean to loose her own brother.

It made me feel good that Dovey changed the way she thinks about people because I don't think people can live with only their opinions.

  27. Dovey and Caroline are two very different people. Because Dovey is a tomboy and Caroline likes to wear dresses and not carry around knives. People react to Dovey as someone who likes to be free and around nature. And they react to Caroline as someone who is independent but who likes to be around people, and is caring and kind. I would rather be like Dovey because she is free and is independent, and still gets along with some people.

  28. I really like the character Dovey. She's always looking for what's best for other people. For instance, her brother Amiss is deaf. She is always looking after him and helping him. Another thing I really like about her is she doesn't look at people and think they're odd because of what they wear. She looks at a person and asks herself if the person is nice from the way they treat her. For instance, her brother is deaf, but she doesn't care. She acts like he is any other normal kid. I also like that she is willing to give her opinion. For instance, when she found out Parnal (who belonged to one of the wealthiest families around.) was trying to marry her sister, she wouldn't allow it because she didn't like the way Parnal treated her and Amiss.
