The Teacher's Funeral

The Teacher's Funeral. A comedy in three parts. That is what it says on the cover of The Teacher's Funeral. Some say, yes! It is a comedy in three parts. I say,ye- no.. maybe,no, yes? n- ye -um, kinda. Some parts are funny, some parts are not the slightest bit funny, and a lot of the parts aren't super duper funny like a comedy. At least, that's what I think. Although, I think that the best part was when the teacher died. Just kidding, Maggie!!! Just kidding! In fact, I think it was one of the saddest parts of the story. Well, there can't be THAT many sad parts or it wouldn't be a comedy. I think this book was a comedy, just not a Ha! Ha! Ho! Ho! throughout the whole story type of comedy. I think that many people in our class would like the book and would probably rate it a 10. I, on the other hand, would rate this book a 9 1/2. I took 1/2 away because I think it wasn't as funny as I thought it would be.

  1. What are some examples of it not being as funny as it could be?

  2. That book sound kind of cufusing. But it doesn't seem like it. I don't get how it could be funny, but that could be one reason that it's funny.

  4. The book is really about what happens at a school after a teacher dies. There are many not so funny parts in the book - like when the teacher dies. Very not funny. But then there are some funny parts that happened BECAUSE the teacher died. For example, kids think they see the teacher's ghost coming back to haunt them. Other parts were just silly - like a lady with a BIG butt.

  5. Emi,

Thanks for loaning the book to me; I loved it!

I've always liked books about what I like to call "the olden days," although 1904 doesn't seem THAT long ago. One of the things that I liked in this book was the juxtaposition of old and new technology, and the insight into the way that changing technology impacted people's lives. We think about technology as computers and electronics, but at the time this book takes place, technology was the telephone and the motor car.

At the end of the book, there was one character who I wondered about: what had happened to him. I like the way the author gave me that information because it wrapped everything up for me in a warm way. (When you read the book, this will make sense.)
