Dragon Rider

I am reading Dragon Rider, by Cornelia Funke, and I love it! One of the reasons I love it is because after reading the great series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, this book is a great follow up, with another great story. This book is about how Firedrake and his brethren dragons are scared that they are out of hope when they think that the humans are coming to get their land. Firedrake is the only dragon brave enough to leave the others and go search for the long lost land that the dragons used to live in called The Rim Of Heaven.
I really like the characters in this book. They are all very different in physical characteristics and personality traits. Firedrake is a silver dragon. He is calm, kind, and curious. Sorrel is a brownie. A brownie is a cat/human/other strange thing. Twigleg is a homunculus. That is basically like a tiny person created to serve his or her master and maker. Ben is a human child, though he is on his own. So when he meets Firedrake and helps him get away from the humans, Firedrake decides he can come on their journey. One of the reasons I like these characters is because of the way they talk to each other and how each of their personalities stands out among the rest. Sorrel, for instance is very grumpy, especially when Firedrake decides to bring Ben on the trip with them. Although along the way Sorrel learns to like and respect Ben.
I really like this books genre. I like how it's a little adventure, and fantasy and mystery. It's adventure because, well the book's all about if Firedrake and his friends can complete their quest to save the dragons and bring them to The rim Of Heaven. It's fantasy, because there are mystical creatures like mountain dwarves, elves, dragons, brownies, homunculuses and much more. And it's a little mystery because on this quest they hear this legend about an old golden  dragon that ate other dragons long ago. Mean while a spy, that is there whenever Firedrake has something important to discuss, is reporting back to this golden dragon about the newest things that are happening.
One thing I don't like about this book is that it has small pictures for every chapter title. However, pictures do not necessarily mean that this book is easy to read. I think it is a perfect level of reading. Although the pictures are good and give me a hint of what the author is saying, they kind of ruin my imaginary pictures in my head.
I think this book is a great action packed novel that sucks the reader into the book, never spitting them out until they're finished experiencing this great book!

  2. Good, you should. I think one of my teachers started reading this book to my class once. I remember I thought it was boring and I didn't understand it, but it's a whole different book when you read it you're self! It's fantastic!
