Aftermath of the Spill (Marin IJ top story, 11/14/07)
This blog was made for talking about the books we read, but sometimes something so big comes along that we need to get into it and share some reading around it. That's why I'm asking you all to post your thoughts about the aftermath of the oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. Read the lead story in today's Independent Journal, talk to people around you about what they know, and share your thinking back and forth with each other here.

I am wrighting about a story that happend to me about the oil spill. On Monday me,my brother, my grandma,& my sister were going to Teenesee valley beach. So at 0.6 mi. to go there was a sign that said do not enter because of the oil spill. So that was a sad day for us. But then we say an old man walking through the sign. We all thought he would get in trabel. But I don't think he did. I am really sad that the oil spred all through the ocean.
ReplyDeleteI read in the newspaper that there were dukes cuvered in oil from head to toe. They would have to take them to this place to clean them with soap and water. It is so tradic that they spilled 58,000 gallons of oil in the bay.I read that they are geting the oil out by useing humen hair. They would go to the hair salon and get bags full of hair and dip it in the oil and the hair obzorbes the oil. they are woired about the seals the otters, birds and any other creater that hags by the top of the water. I thought the fish would be killed but the oil stays on top of the water. The bad thing is that this type of oil is not the kind you would eat out of. It is a think nasty black oil. I hope they can get the oil out before it spreds even more.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the newspapper I read that there are more than 50 wokers to help clean it up. I also feel bad for the animals, because they can get really sick, some can also die. It said that some of the wokers went to salons and got full bags of hair. I hope theres a lot of people to help so the oil can come out faster.
ReplyDeletei am someone that relly likes crab and i am very suprised that a harber ship would land in the bay and crash i wonder if they will finish the job when they said that there was going to be on Dec. 1 but i wonder if there will be more people on the job to clean it up i think this will also afect the other seasons because there is less time in the seasons. I am also very desapinted that the breeding hawks and raptors haave eaten some of the fish and sence they are oiled they will die because it is poisened.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much damage this has done. I feel horrible for all of the birds and all of the other sea life. I think maggie is right. Other than some of the monumental earthquakes, this is probably one of the worst disaters that has happend in California. It really shows you how much damage these enviromental problems we're creating can do. If we could find something else other than oil and gas, we wouldn't have half of the problems we have today.
ReplyDeleteI'm really sad that all the fish and animals are dying just because the oil spill but were also killing animals and polluting the San Francisco bay. Now know one can swim and fish. I can't understand how much oil spilled into the ocean. I hope the cleaners can clean up before it spreads even more!
ReplyDeleteThe oil spill is so sad because tons of annimals could die! One day my mom said that we would go clean up some oily animals and I had no idea what she was talking about; now I do. I learned that on Angel Isaland, a couple who lived there saw a red tailed hawk feeding on an oily bird. Luckily, a team who was searching for injured/animals like the red tailed hawk found the raptor and saved him/her.
ReplyDeleteI was quite happy when I read that!
I a person like Matias who is a crab love! I'm really intrested in how the ship hit the brige.I wounder if the crab is really afeced by it because the oli is on the top of the water. I don't get how the ship hit the brige and let out 58,000 gallonds of oli. I scared for all the sea life and birds. I hope we get some crab and the the whole crab season doesn't get ruined by this bad oli pill.
ReplyDeleteI am so sad that the oil spill killed so many birds, and right after they had flown all this way to survive a lot of them die. 485 birds died and 652 were covered in oil but still alive. I am delighted that people are finding so many different ways to clean this up. For example, they are gathering the oil by taking two boats Connected by bags of things that float. Then they ride around the oil and get the oil caught in between the two boats. Then they can get rid of it. Another way they are getting rid of the oil is by putting these pom-pom like things in the water to suck up the oil. I am gleeful that the oil floats because if it went under water mare animals would die and it would be harder to clean up. I am glad that the crab season is being backed up to December 1st. Although a lot of people are sad that the season is going to start later I am glad because then no one will get sick.
ReplyDeleteShanna I agree that is so cool that they can find a simple solution to help. Where as in some places there are clean up teams who have come close to giving up because they don't have the right tools.
ReplyDeleteDakota my dad read about a guy who went on to Muir Beach when it was closed and the ranger arrested him. I wonder if they are really going to get the oil cleaned up by Dec.1 I don't think so. I read in the paper the day after the tanker crashed that it was so bad some officials were planning for a week of shut down oceans.
I wonder what happened when the boat crashed. Was the captain not paying attention, was it really foggy, or was he plain not paying attention? Ether way I think he feels really bad. I know I would.
It is really sad that so many animals have to suffer from this. The one good thing that comes out of it is that everyone is aware and evan after they get it all cleaned up people will still be a little timid and the wildlife will get a break.
I know Izzy! My dad was talking about how when he was about our age an oil tanker crashed on Stinsion and how everyone went out to help clean up. I think it is sad that people can't help if the don't have a license to do so. My mom called in to see if there was anything that we could do to help they said that the best thing to do was put up awareness flyers. I don't see how anyone couldn't know by now. It is such a disaster!
Emily I think that because they have to keep the crabs alive as long as possible and to take in water they take in oil.
I think that it is silly to let San Pueblo beach open for fishing. Nothing is going to keep a fish with a little oil in it's body so it is not sick yet to swim into that beach someone to fish it up. Then some poor family eat it for dinner. What would happen then? Well saying sad goodbye.
I found that when Bree Hardcastle saw the red tailed hawk with oil all over it kind of scary, and I agree with Shanna and Annapurna, they can find a very simple solution too the problem.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Matias because the animal population ( that swims ) will go down, but I wonder by how much?
I really hope we can help at least a little bit.
I don't think the majority of the results of it all really scare me. What Iam worried about is what the bay will look like when its all cleaned up, I wonder if everything is actually going to heal? I am also worried that the animals might have a lot of difficulty replenishing and rebreeding, because I know I love them.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I read nothing about cleaning up oil with hair. I also like crabs too. I had crab cakes last night, I feel guilty now. When I was reading about fishing and stuff, I felt that they should not be worrying about catching crabs and eating them and people getting sick. I thought that they should get the crabs and help them stay alive. I mean if they stay in the oil to long they are gonna die right? Cause, pretty soon, there are not going to be any more crabs! At least they are doing that with the birds. This is just a reminder. That pretty soon, we are going to have to take action to become not so dependent on oil and gas! This is not at all good.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was reading the news paper my mom was watching the news and it was about the oil spill. So when I read it I also got info from the news like some of the birds there were indanegred. I wonder how far it has got and how far it will get. This is realy big. Every day I see it on the news, I thought that it would only last for a few days. But I was wrong. I hope it stops soon!
ReplyDeleteI think I know what you are all thinking. That you are very mad at the pilot of the tanker.DON'T be mad at the pilot. He follows a tugger which leads through out the bay. The pilot of the tugger ASSUMED that he knew the bay when he didn't understand the language on his radar. There for, he lead the tanker into the bridge. Before I read the article I tought they we wouldn't go in the bay for a long, long time. But when I read the article it said that Stinson Beach was cleaned up 80%, and Muir and Rodeo Beaches were cleaned up 60%. THAT'S GREAT! There is still a lot of oil but those beaches are pretty clean. It is going to afect all the animals so quickly. But the good news is the scientists are getting ducks out of the bay quicly.
ReplyDeleteI think it's terrible it happened because it has affected so many peoples lives in so many different ways. For instance, it has affected wild life too!
ReplyDeleteThis oil spill has a huge impact for plants and animals. Like some scientists are hooping birds and trying to get rid of the oil on their fethers. And a couple of days ago my mom was walking along the marsh near my house and there were so many jellyfish at the edge of the water. It was like they were trying to get out of the oily water. And on the marsh there were more birds than usual.
ReplyDeleteI feel sad for the poor birds near the oil spill. Also for the fish and animals.I have noticed that a lot of things have happened on or near the bay bridge this year.I'm glad I don't like crabs.
ReplyDeletei feel really sad for all the animals that are dieing or getting sick.i wish it had never happend. i hope they can help all the animals and clean up this mess. the things that eat the fish that are poisend get sick to.
ReplyDeleteI think that the oil spill could last longer than everyone thinks. I realized that with crab season being postponed, all the crabbers will lose their jobs. I think that when the government opens up fishing again, the fish won't be as good as before.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long it will take to clean up all of the oil. I really hope that Angel Island will get cleaned up fast. With the beaches closed on Angel Island, it won't be as big of a tourist attraction.
I don't understand how the driver of the boat could have hit the Bay Bridge; it's not like it's tiny or anything. I understand that there is an investigation looking at how he made such a mistake.
I can't believe that they are using human hair to soak up the oil. I've never seen these boats in use to clean up the spill. It is really amazing what some of them can do.
I hope that this tragic experience will never happen again, and all of the marine life recovers.
I think it's so sad that all those fish died because of an oil spill that just came out of kow where, I mean who knew that there was going to be a massive oil spill when there has'nt been one in just about twenty years. I wonder if crab season will be afected in any sort of way.I'm guesing that it would take over a year to clean up all of that oil, I can't even imagine trying to clean a liquid out of a liquid, phew! A lot of work!
ReplyDeleteWhat i've heard is that the coast gaurd warned the captain that he was getting to close to the pillers but the captain said that his instuments were showing him that he was on target. Big mistake!
ReplyDeleteThe story on the oil spill was interesting but also kind of scary like what it did to the wildlife but the part that most stuck out at me was the part were it said "By 3 p.m., it was clear, the spill's impact was greater than expected. Oil lapped the island. The slick slammed into Point Blunt on the island's southeast side, spreading in a southerly direction, soiling beaches, coves, rocks, pritty much everthing in its path". Why that stuck out to me was because i was interesting but scary. When I first herd that there was a oil spill I really did not know what it really was. Now that I read the article it is actually really interesting but sad of what it did to the beches and the wildlife of Angle Island.
ReplyDeleteI think that it would be cool to do a test by seeing about how much oil was on the birds feathers. If they estemated about how many birds were in the area that swim coudn't they help the birds and once they do that the birds woun't spreed the oil. Like Shanna said in her first sentince I think there are a lot of birds that could use are help. The questoin is does the oil from the birds feathers spred. I also thought that because all the fish were affected when the birds eat the fish they will be affected to. It's like a food chain.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the newspaper I thought that 58,000 gallons could fill up like half of Mill Valley. And it is also sad to see the birds covered in oil, it's nasty, they're all black and all sticky. I wonder what the fish look like, are they black too? I dont think they are if they stay deep in the water. I hate that they are closing down fishing in the bay. That is where the fish are I eat!
ReplyDeleteWell Joseph. There is always the possibility that with the tide the oil can come back in to shore. It also really hurts that so many birds and other migrating species came here to survive and end up becoming endangered.
ReplyDeleteSam, eventually the fish have to come up to breathe. So no matter what I think that the fish will get infected.
Zoe Some people predict that this will take far more than a week or two to get cleaned up. Some people have said that it will take over a year to clean up. Hope that doesn't happen!
